Canadian agencies join forces to aid Lebanese victims Sean Patrick Sullivan / canadian press National - Monday, July 24, 2006 @ 09:00 Four Canadian aid agencies have teamed up to raise funds to help an estimated 500,000 people displaced by the violent conflict in Lebanon. CARE Canada, Save the Children Canada, Oxfam Canada and Oxfam-Quebec have formed The Humanitarian Coalition, joining a growing force of international groups that are providing aid to the damaged country. The four organizations are already active in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, Israel, Jordan and Syria, and hope to make donations more effective by uniting their efforts. "So many charities have competed with each other for donations," said Kevin McCort, senior vice-president of operations for CARE Canada. "If that's a barrier to people giving, we need to remove the barrier." Today, UN relief co-ordinator Jan Egeland is expected to call for $100 million US in donations for aid to Lebanon.
